UPI Transaction Limits in India: What You Need to Know

UPI Transaction Limits in India: What You Need to Know

UPI has become one of the most convenient ways to send and receive money in India. People use UPI for everything from small payments at local shops to larger payments for services.

However, the amount you can send through UPI can depend on the type of transaction, the payment category, your bank and the UPI app you use.

What Is UPI?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system that allows users to transfer money between participating bank accounts through supported UPI applications.

UPI can be used for person-to-person payments as well as payments to merchants.

Is There One UPI Limit for Every Payment?

No. UPI limits are not necessarily identical for every type of payment. Different categories can have different limits, and banks or payment providers may also apply their own limits.

The Reserve Bank of India has increased UPI limits for certain categories. For example, the limit for tax payments through UPI was increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh per transaction in an RBI announcement.

Higher Limits for Selected Payments

Certain categories have received higher transaction limits. RBI has also increased the limit for UPI payments to hospitals and educational institutions to ₹5 lakh per transaction.

This does not mean that every normal UPI payment automatically has a ₹5 lakh limit.

Why Your Bank's Limit Matters

Even when the regulatory framework allows a particular transaction limit, your bank or UPI service may impose a lower operational limit.

If a large transaction fails, check the limit shown by your bank or UPI application before trying again.

UPI Safety Tips

  • Never share your UPI PIN with anyone.
  • Do not enter your UPI PIN simply to receive money.
  • Check the recipient's name before approving a payment.
  • Do not approve unknown collect requests.
  • Never share OTPs or banking passwords with callers.
  • Use only trusted banking and UPI applications.

Final Takeaway

UPI is designed for fast digital payments, but the applicable transaction limit depends on the payment category and the rules or limits applied by your bank and payment service.

For important or high-value payments, always verify the applicable limit with your bank or payment provider before making the transaction.
